The Finley name is ubiquitous in Raleigh, no more so than around NC State athletics.

The man behind the name, Albert Earle (A.E.) Finley, lived a life worthy of the legacy he left behind. As the largest equipment distributor in the United States, Mr. Finley established himself as a renowned businessman and prominent local leader. Once you met him, you never forgot him. But despite his success, status, and position, his reputation was one of humility. If someone sent him a thank you note, and thank them right back. As a boss, he demanded a lot but gave even more. And he loved NC State.

Despite being the University’s largest contributor, he didn’t carry himself as if he was owed anything. On one occasion, he inquired about extra tickets to the ACC Tournament, almost apologizing as he made the request. A few days after receiving the tickets, he sent the following note to the athletic department: “I now know why Mr. Webster puts gratitude in his dictionary!”

In physical stature, he was a small man, but in true stature, as a human being, he was a giant of a man. He was a serious businessman with a warm smile and quick humor. One of his favorite ways to regularly hosted golf outings and barbeques for NC State’s athletic department.

When the Wolfpack Club and directors approached him about naming the new football stadium Finley-Carter stadium, he was adamant that his name come after Carter, which of course paid homage to brothers Harry and Nick Carter, a pair of NC State graduates who were successful textile manufacturers and supporters of the University.

Mr. Finley’s impact on the state is undeniable, funding churches, universities, colleges, YMCAs, and hospitals. Our hope is to carry out his passion for the community and NC State athletics, honoring the man who did so much for us all.
